In a perfect world, each ergogenic aid would be tested in a laboratory situation to identify metabolic and physiological functions, ideal dose rate, and adaptation period, and then tested in the field to identify actual performance effects. Since it is not a perfect world, assessment of the value of ergogenic aids must be made on the information available and on new information.
The following is a brief discussion of B vitamins and hematinics blood builders , two of the more common nutritional supplements reputed to have an ergogenic benefit in horses. In human studies, deficient vitamin intakes combined B1, B2, B6, and C have been reported to have a negative impact on physical performance, even though general health was not affected. One study showed that thiamin supplementation increased the anaerobic threshold in cyclists.
The normal equine diet contains most B vitamins, with the exception of B12, which can be synthesized and absorbed in the gut. The microbial population in the large intestine is also capable of synthesizing other B vitamins, including thiamin. It has generally been accepted that the levels of B vitamins provided by typical diets and microbial synthesis are not deficient for horses.
However, the absence of classical vitamin deficiency signs does not necessarily imply optimal vitamin status. Because of its role in the conversion of pyruvate to acetyl COA, thiamin has received particular attention as an ergogenic aid. Over the years, the National Research Council has increased the recommendation for thiamin based on research results. In one study where three horses received three levels of dietary thiamin, blood lactate levels following 30 minutes of exercise were lower in horses receiving the highest level of thiamin, but the lactate levels were relatively low below the proposed anaerobic threshold for all treatments.
Horses receiving the highest dose of thiamin excreted significantly more thiamin in the urine and were in positive thiamin balance. None of these results can be used to prove that vitamin B supplementation definitely leads to better performance in horses. Hematinics are used to a large extent in the horse industry, although there is very limited research support for this practice.
The compounds in this category used alone or in combination include iron, copper, zinc, pyridoxine, B12, and folic acid. These nutrients are involved in hemoglobin synthesis and erythropoiesis. The availability of adequate hemoglobin is essential for oxygen transport. Evaluations relating to the implementation of these programmes and guidelines have not been conducted nationally, although certain studies show that coverage of the PMTCT and the ARV therapy programmes was low.
FBDGs for infants and young children could complement and strengthen the implementation of these programmes and guidelines. However, FBDGs must be in line with national and international guidelines and address key nutritional issues in these infants and young children. These issues and various recommendations are discussed in detail in this review. Several researches on creatine have been done due to its potential effects on the physical performance of athletes involved in high intensity, short duration and intermittent exercises with short periods of recovery.
Phosphorylated creatine is an energy reserve in the muscle cells. During an intense exercise, its breakdown liberates energy used to regenerate adenosine triphosphate. There is still controversy regarding the benefits and risks of supplementation with this substance. This paper reviews some aspects related to the creatine metabolism and its use as an ergogenic substance in sports practice. To study the effects of caffeine and sodium bicarbonate on intense Impact of animal density on cattle nutrition in dry Mediterranean rangelands: a faecal near-IR spectroscopy- aided study. In the context of determining the sustainable carrying capacity of dry-Mediterranean herbaceous rangelands, we examined the effect of animal density on cattle nutrition , which is fundamental to animal performance and welfare.
The effects on dietary components of low 0. In the dry season summer and early autumn , cows had free access to N-rich poultry litter PL given as a dietary supplement. Near-IR spectroscopy was applied also to faecal samples to determine the chemical composition of the diet selected by the animal, as well as the contents of ash, NDF and CP in the faeces themselves. Seasonal categories were green, dry without PL supplementation and dry with it. We found no effects of animal density on nutrition during the green season but effects were apparent when cows consumed dry pasture.
Ash content predicted by faecal NIRS was higher in the diet than in plant samples clipped from pasture, which infers that cows ingested soil. Dietary and faecal ash contents were higher Panimals. During the dry period, dietary contents of ME were higher in L than in H Panimal health, the above results cast doubts on the long-term sustainability of the higher of the animal densities tested. Chemical information revealed with NIRS can be used to evaluate whether animal densities are compatible with animal health and welfare standards and can play a role in determining the carrying capacity of Mediterranean rangelands.

The efficacy of acute nutritional interventions on soccer skill performance. The use of nutritional ergogenic aids in team sports such as soccer is now commonplace. Aligned with the primary aim of soccer, which is to score more goals than the opposition within the allotted time, the quality of performance of technical actions i. However, when seeking to maintain soccer skill performance, information about the efficacy of nutritional interventions is lacking and factors which might modulate the efficacy of such strategies are unclear. This review aimed i to systematically evaluate the current research that examines the efficacy of nutritional interventions on soccer skills, and ii to provide a qualitative commentary on factors that have the potential to modulate the efficacy of such strategies.
Relevant databases PubMed and SPORTDiscus were searched up to and including 1 July, for studies that investigated the efficacy of acute nutritional interventions on soccer skill performances. Overall, records were retrieved. Articles were independently assessed for the quality of the methods employed based upon the Physiotherapy Evidence Database PEDro scale.
Records achieving a minimum PEDro score of 5 out of 10 were included in this review. Qualitative appraisal of 13 articles was performed after the application of exclusion criteria and quality assurance processes. The field of sports nutrition is defined not only by dietary recommendations for various athletes, research and new supplements that are on store shelves but also by the direction of the industry itself. Consumer spending, media coverage, professional athlete endorsement of various supplements, lawsuits, regulations in governing bodies and clinical research all have an impact on the direction and growth of the sports nutrition industry.
To date, no supplement has affected sports nutrition as much as creatine and the company that both funded most of the research supporting the ergogenic benefits of creatine and capitalized on such research. There is no current leader in the sports nutrition market. Instead, companies are vying among steady competition for space on store shelves and overall product sales. Full Text Available Background. The negative interactive effects of undernutrition, inadequate food. Nutritional surveillance. The concept of nutritional surveillance is derived from disease surveillance, and means "to watch over nutrition , in order to make decisions that lead to improvements in nutrition in populations".
Three distinct objectives have been defined for surveillance systems, primarily in relation to problems of malnutrition in developing countries: to aid long-term planning in health and development; to provide input for programme management and evaluation; and to give timely warning of the need for intervention to prevent critical deteriorations in food consumption. Decisions affecting nutrition are made at various administrative levels, and the uses of different types of nutritional surveillance information can be related to national policies, development programmes, public health and nutrition programmes, and timely warning and intervention programmes.
The information should answer specific questions, for example concerning the nutritional status and trends of particular population groups. Defining the uses and users of the information is the first essential step in designing a system; this is illustrated with reference to agricultural and rural development planning, the health sector, and nutrition and social welfare programmes. The most usual data outputs are nutritional outcome indicators e. Often, additional "status" indicators, such as quality of housing or water supply, are presented at the same time.
On the other hand, timely warning requires earlier indicators of the possibility of nutritional deterioration, and agricultural indicators are often the most appropriate.

However, to date, no study has investigated whether motivation would continue after chronic exposure to this factor. The objective of this study was to examine the continuity of the ergogenic effect of asynchronous music on endurance running performance time limit to exhaustion, Tlim before and after a 4-week period of exposure to motivational music musical saturation.
Both groups were subjected to endurance running for 4 weeks. Before and after this period, Tlim was measured with and without the use of motivational music in both groups. EG was exposed to musical saturation during the exercise sessions. The results confirmed the acute ergogenic effect of motivational asynchronous music; however, this effect did not continue after the saturation period. It can be concluded that, although motivational music exerts an acute positive effect on endurance exercise performance, a 4-week chronic exposure to this music appears to suppress its ergogenic effect.

This article highlights new nutritional concerns or practices that may influence the adaptation to training. The discussion is based on the assumption that the adaptation to repeated bouts of training occurs during recovery periods and that if one can train harder, the adaptation will be greater. Four issues have been identified where recent scientific information will force sports nutritionists to embrace new issues and reassess old issues and, ultimately, alter the nutritional recommendations they give to athletes.
These are: 1 caffeine ingestion; 2 creatine ingestion; 3 the use of intramuscular triacylglycerol IMTG as a fuel during exercise and the nutritional effects on IMTG repletion following exercise; and 4 the role nutrition may play in regulating the expression of genes during and after exercise training sessions. Recent findings suggest that low doses of caffeine exert significant ergogenic effects by directly affecting the central nervous system during exercise. Caffeine can cross the blood-brain barrier and antagonize the effects of adenosine, resulting in higher concentrations of stimulatory neurotransmitters.
These new data strengthen the case for using low doses of caffeine during training. On the other hand, the data on the role that supplemental creatine ingestion plays in augmenting the increase in skeletal muscle mass and strength during resistance training remain equivocal. Some studies are able to demonstrate increases in muscle fibre size with creatine ingestion and some are not.
The final two nutritional topics are new and have not progressed to the point that we can specifically identify strategies to enhance the adaptation to training. However, it is likely that nutritional strategies will be needed to replenish the IMTG that is used during endurance exercise. It is not. Nutritional Support. The ergogenic value of caffeine on mental and physical performance has been well-established but the potential additive benefits of other nutrients contained in ED and ES remains to be determined. Many ED and ES contain numerous ingredients; these products in particular merit further study to demonstrate their safety and potential effects on physical and mental performance.
However, ingestion of higher calorie ED may promote weight gain if the energy intake from consumption of ED is not carefully considered as part of the total daily energy intake. Athletes should consider the impact of ingesting high glycemic load carbohydrates on metabolic health, blood glucose and insulin levels, as well as the effects of caffeine and other stimulants on motor skill performance. Children and adolescents should only consider use of ED or ES with parental approval after consideration of the amount of carbohydrate, caffeine, and other nutrients contained in the ED or ES and a thorough understanding of the potential side effects.

The interventions used in these studies were as follows: diet, diet and physical exercises, diet and supplementation, and only supplementation. Dyslipidemia was the outcome assessed in all studies. Studies that assessed omega-3 supplementation found a significant reduction in triglycerides. The specific diet with omega-3 supplementation showed an increase in HDL-cholesterol. Chrome nicotinate supplementation did not have an effect on dyslipidemia.
Changing one's lifestyle, including diet and physical activity, significantly reduced waist circumference, lipodystrophy and systolic blood pressure. Prescribing a specific diet appeared to be the most adequate intervention to increase HDL-cholesterol. Inferences could not be made about the nutritional treatment of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and insulin resistance.
Changes in lifestyle can promote an improvement in lipodystrophy and blood pressure. Experience has shown that the intelligent modeling environment provided by the ATHENA AIDE expert system helps ease the modeling task by relieving the analyst of many mundane, repetitive, and error prone procedures involved in the construction of an input model. This reduces errors in the resulting models, helps promote standardized modeling practices, and allows models to be constructed more quickly than was previously possible.
In the last 20 years, Public Health Nutrition focused mainly on the qualitative aspects which may influence the onset of chronic diseases, quality of life, physical and mental performance and life expectancy. This applied knowledge organised as part of preventive and health promotion programs led to the development of Community Nutrition.
The aim of Community Nutrition actions is to adequate lifestyles related to food consumption patterns in order to improve the quality of life and contribute to health promotion of the population in the community where programs and services are delivered. Key functions to develop in a Community Nutrition Unit consist in the identification and assessment of nutrition problems in the community as well as the design, implementation and evaluation of intervention programs by means of appropriate strategies.
These should aim at different populations groups and settings, such as work places, schools, high risk groups or the general public. Nowadays, Community Nutrition work efforts should focus on three main aspects: nutrition education in schools and in the community; food safety and food security and the development and reinforcement of food preparation skills across all age groups.
Social catering services, either in schools, the work place or at the community level, need to ensure adequate nutritional supply, provide foods contributing to healthy eating practices as well as to enhance culinary traditions and social learning. Food safety and food security have become a top priority in Public Health. The concepts referes to the availability of food safe and adequate as well as in sufficient amount in order to satisfy nutrition requirements of all individuals in the community.
Social changes along new scientific developments will introduce new demands in Community Nutrition work and individual dietary counselling will become a key strategy. In order to face new challenges, community nutrition pactitioners require a high quality. AIDS guidelines. Full Text Available Due to higher energy consumption, physically active people have higher nutritional requirements. In addition to other important factors for sports, such as good health and physical predisposition, adequate nutrition is a fundamental component.
Sports nutrition must be well planned and individually adapted based on physical characteristics, tendencies towards gaining or losing weight, frequency, duration and intensity of training sessions. Studies have shown that a well-balanced ratio of macro and micronutrients, with the support of supplements and adequate hydration, can significantly improve athletic performance and plays a key role in achieving better results.
An optimally designed nutritional program, with realistic and achievable goals, which complements a well-planned training program, is the basis for success in sports. Only when nutritional requirements are met, deficits can be prevented and performance in sport pushed to the limit. Nutritional strategies of physically active subjects with muscle dysmorphia. The aim of this study was to identify dietary strategies for physically active individuals with muscle dysmorphia based on a systematic literature review.
References were included if the study population consisted of adults over 18 years old who were physically active in fitness centers. We identified reports through an electronic search ofScielo, Lilacs and Medline using the following keywords: muscle dysmorphia, vigorexia, distorted body image, and exercise.
We found eight articles in Scielo, 17 in Medline and 12 in Lilacs. Among the total number of 37 articles, only 17 were eligible for inclusion in this review. The results indicated that the feeding strategies used by physically active individuals with muscle dysmorphia did not include planning or the supervision of a nutritionist. Diet included high protein and low fat foods and the ingestion of dietary and ergogenic supplements to reduce weight.
Physically active subjects with muscle dysmorphia could benefit from the help of nutritional professionals to evaluate energy estimation, guide the diet and its distribution in macronutrient and consider the principle of nutrition to functional recovery of the digestive process, promote liver detoxification, balance and guide to organic adequate intake of supplemental nutrients and other substances.
Use of nutritional supplements by Danish elite athletes and fitness customers. Several evidences were presented during the meeting in London entitled "Origins of AIDS and the HIV epidemic," debating the idea that AIDS was an accidental result of a polio vaccination campaign conducted by a virologist, Hilary Koprowski, and colleagues in the late s among thousands of people in the Belgian Congo.
The meeting carefully examined the CHAT theory presented by a writer, Edward Hooper, in his book "The River" and has raised questions on the correlation between vaccination sites and early records of HIV-1, and on the estimated amount of HIV particles that would get through each stage of the process of creating CHAT. Overall, the meeting agreed to reject the CHAT theory of AIDS for it has no basis, since Koprowski and colleagues denied the use of chimpanzee kidneys, which Hooper openly suggests in his book. The meeting noted that the disease's origins remain a mystery.
Nutrition in Africa. Village women have adopted techniques set down by UNICEF in achieving higher food production and, ultimately, self sufficiency. Women's cooperatives integrate kitchen gardening and irrigated agriculture in an effort to combat the complex nutritional problems in Africa. Projects also offered training in a variety of areas including management of plots, labor-saving technology--diesel-driven grinding mills, rice husking, machines, wells with hand pumps, motor pumps for irrigation, all geared towards women benefitting themselves by growing their own food and furthering their children's health and development.
Projects such as the one in Senegal were undertaken in other regions of Africa, like the Sahel and the Wadis--low-lying areas. From these projects, aid agencies and governments have suggested a number of recommendations in seeking a solution to Africa's nutritional problems. Nutrition in developing countries cannot be viewed as an isolated phenomenon--solutions to nutritional development should include all aspects of the problem including health and nutrition education, growth monitoring, water supply, literacy, technological know-how, and agricultural and plant and soil conservation.
Negotiating Aid. This article presents a new analytical approach to the study of aid negotiations. Space Nutrition. Optimal nutrition will be critical for crew members who embark on space exploration missions. Nutritional assessment provides an opportunity to ensure that crewmembers begin their missions in optimal nutritional status, to document changes during a mission and, if necessary, to provide intervention to maintain that status throughout the mission, and to assesses changes after landing in order to facilitate the return to their normal status as soon as possible after landing.
We report here the findings from our nutritional assessment of astronauts who participated in the International Space Station ISS missions, along with flight and ground-based research findings.
We also present ongoing and planned nutrition research activities. These studies provide evidence that bone loss, compromised vitamin status, and oxidative damage are the critical nutritional concerns for space travelers. Other nutrient issues exist, including concerns about the stability of nutrients in the food system, which are exposed to longterm storage and radiation during flight. Defining nutrient requirements, and being able to provide and maintain those nutrients on exploration missions, will be critical for maintaining crew member health.

A recent NCEPOD report identified a number of inadequacies in the overall provision and management of parenteral nutrition and recommendations were made with the aim of improving clinical practice in the future. This paper focuses on the practical aspects relating to parenteral nutrition for adults, including important concepts, such as patient selection, as well as general management.
We also explore the various pitfalls and potential complications and how these may be minimised. Nutritional Supplements for Endurance Athletes. Athletes engaged in heavy endurance training often seek additional nutritional strategies to help maximize performance. Specific nutritional supplements exist to combat certain factors that limit performance beginning with a sound everyday diet. Research has further demonstrated that safe, effective, legal supplements are in fact available for today's endurance athletes.
Several of these supplements are marketed not only to aid performance but also to combat the immunosuppressive effects of intense endurance training. It is imperative for each athlete to research the legality of certain supplements for their specific sport or event. Once the legality has been established, it is often up to each individual athlete to decipher the ethics involved with ingesting nutritional supplements with the sole intent of improving performance.
