EUREN debates are often difficult. They reflect the differences in perspectives, perceptions and narratives that today characterize the relationship between the EU and Russia. Over the past few years they were able to build a trustful relationship which allows them to disagree on many crucial issues and yet focus on others where progress in mutual relations is possible.

I believe that a frank, strategic and comprehensive dialogue between EU and Russia is essential for mitigating regional and global risks.
While such dialogue remains problematic at the official level, informal but frank and honest discussions among experts offer a unique opportunity to improve understanding and generate forward-looking ideas for the policy-makers on both sides. Oksana Antonenko is a Director at the Global Risk Analysis team at Control Risks Group where she focuses on analysing political, regularity and security risks in Europe and Eurasia for senior decision-makers in the private and public sectors.
She published extensively on regional security topics, including Russia's relations with the EU and NATO, arms control issues, protracted conflicts in Eurasia, energy security and regional cooperation in the Black Sea area. It is a privilege to be part of EUREN, an important conduit for ensuring that the frank and informed dialogue which is necessary for that communication, is facilitated. Leiden University.
